Metal Weight Calculator
Instant weight for plate, sheet, bar, pipe, tube, angle and coil in steel, aluminum, copper, brass, titanium and eight more metals.
Plate Weight Calculator
Weight of a flat metal plate from its length, width and thickness.
Coil Weight Calculator
Weight of a coil of sheet or strip, plus the length of strip wound into it.
Strip length comes from the ring cross-section: π × (OD² − ID²) ÷ (4 × thickness). Real coils vary slightly with winding tightness.
Round Bar Weight Calculator
Weight of solid round bar or rod from its diameter and length.
Pipe & Tube Weight Calculator
Weight of hollow pipe or round tube from outer diameter, wall thickness and length.
Sheet Metal Weight Calculator
Weight of sheet metal from length, width and thickness. Use the gauge chart below to convert a gauge number to thickness.
Sheet metal gauge to thickness (standard steel)
| Gauge | Thickness (in) | Thickness (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 0.1793 | 4.55 |
| 8 | 0.1644 | 4.18 |
| 10 | 0.1345 | 3.42 |
| 11 | 0.1196 | 3.04 |
| 12 | 0.1046 | 2.66 |
| 14 | 0.0747 | 1.90 |
| 16 | 0.0598 | 1.52 |
| 18 | 0.0478 | 1.21 |
| 20 | 0.0359 | 0.91 |
| 22 | 0.0299 | 0.76 |
| 24 | 0.0239 | 0.61 |
| 26 | 0.0179 | 0.45 |
Gauge thickness varies by material. This chart is for standard (uncoated) steel; stainless and aluminum use different gauge standards.
Square & Flat Bar Weight Calculator
Weight of square or flat bar stock. For square bar, enter the same width and thickness.
Angle Weight Calculator
Weight of angle (L-bar), from steel angle iron to aluminum angle. For equal angle, enter the same value for both legs.
Based on the cross-section t × (A + B − t). Real angle is slightly heavier because of the inner fillet radius.
Square & Rectangular Tube Weight Calculator
Weight of hollow square or rectangular tube (HSS) from outer width, height, wall thickness and length. For square tube, enter the same width and height.
Sharp-corner approximation: (W × H − inner area) × length. Real HSS with rounded corners is slightly lighter.

How to calculate metal weight
Every calculator works the same way: find the volume of the part, then multiply by the density of the metal.
| Shape | Volume |
|---|---|
| Plate / sheet | L × W × T |
| Round bar | π ÷ 4 × D² × L |
| Pipe / round tube | π ÷ 4 × (OD² − ID²) × L, where ID = OD − 2 × wall |
| Square & flat bar | W × T × L |
| Square / rectangular tube | [W × H − (W − 2t)(H − 2t)] × L |
| Angle | t × (A + B − t) × L |
| Coil | π ÷ 4 × (OD² − ID²) × strip width |
Example: a plate 1000 mm × 1000 mm × 10 mm has a volume of 0.01 m³. In steel (7,850 kg/m³) it weighs 78.5 kg. The same plate in aluminum (2,700 kg/m³) weighs 27 kg, and in copper (8,960 kg/m³) 89.6 kg.

Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate the weight of metal?
Multiply the volume of the part by the density of the metal. For a plate that is length × width × thickness × density. Steel is about 7,850 kg/m³ and aluminum about 2,700 kg/m³.
Do different metals weigh different amounts?
Yes. The same size part in aluminum weighs about a third as much as steel, copper is about 14% heavier than steel, and lead is about 44% heavier.
Does thickness affect the weight?
Yes. Weight scales directly with thickness, so doubling the thickness doubles the weight.
What density should I use for steel?
Most carbon and mild steel is 7,850 kg/m³ (0.284 lb/in³). Stainless steel is slightly heavier at about 8,000 kg/m³.
How much does a steel plate weigh per square metre?
A 1 mm thick steel plate weighs about 7.85 kg per square metre. Multiply by the thickness in mm for other sizes, so 10 mm is about 78.5 kg per square metre.
Is this calculator accurate?
It uses standard published densities. Real material varies slightly with alloy and mill tolerance, so treat results as close estimates for ordering and shipping.
